Veganic Farming: What is this Farming Method of Millennials All About?

Have you ever heard about veganic farming? Vegan-organic farming is the cultivation and production of crops with a minimal amount of harm to any animal. The method uses no animal products or by-products like bone meal or any animal-origin matter.

So is it sustainable and viable? Let us find it out here.

How Does Veganic Farming Work?

In certified organic farming, there are no artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and no GMOs (genetically modified organisms). For now, this method of farming is not so popular. Many believe that practically, it is not possible to produce foods through vegan farming. However, it is a good method and idea to contribute to vegan farmers whenever possible.

How Farmers Maintain Soil Fertility?

Soil Fertility is maintained by the use of cover crops, composted vegetable matter, green wastes, and minerals. Some gardeners supplement this with humanure from vegans, produced from compost toilets and human urine which provides nitrogen.

Veganic farmers usually prepare the soil for cultivation using the same method, used by organic gardeners allowing the weeds to decompose.

Types of Veganiculture That You Should Know

Before you plan to contribute or start veganic farming, know about the types of veganiculture and how they are used.

1. Forest Gardening

It is a low-maintenance sustainable plant-based food production and a system based on incorporating herbs, perennial vegetables, nut trees, and woodland ecosystems.

With the help of companion planting (planting of different crops), these can be mixed to replicate a woodland habitat. Green leafy vegetables, nuts, and fruits are the main products from forest gardening.

2. Veganic Gardening

It is the method of growing edible plants without or with minimal use of chemical pesticides or animal inputs such as bone or blood. Veganic gardening employs techniques that ensure fertility is created onsite.

Veganic Gardening can be done commercially, and there are veganic farms in several countries, including the UK, India, France, the US, and more.

3. Vegan Permaculture

It avoids the use of domesticated animals. This method recognizes the importance of not domesticated animals and free-living animals and creates a balanced system.

The term Permaculture was introduced by David Holmgren. It has several branches and is not limited to ecological engineering, environmental design, and ecological design.

Final Words

Several veganic experts conduct interviews with veganic farmers to better understand farmer identified best practices, including resources to expand the veganic agriculture movement.

Industrial chemical-based agriculture is the most destructive human activity on the planet. It adversely affects the environment and biodiversity. This is harmful for both humans and animals.

For stopping these problems, the veganic farming method is used by the farmers. In this way, they are contributing to the environment and also building knowledge on farmer needs and best practices.

According to you, which method is better? Veganic farming or the one that uses pesticides another chemical.
